More Than A Meal

Message From The Farm:

It was a joy last weekend to spend a couple of mornings with the team at Töast, a local restaurant that makes a genuine effort to source ingredients from nearby farms whenever possible. Partnerships like this remind us that farming doesn't happen in isolation - what we grow ultimately connects to chefs, kitchens and tables. I had the chance to speak with various diners, and the questions were thoughtful and encouraging. People wanted to know about our farming practices, how we cared for our animals and even how we've been navigating recovery after the fire we experienced on January 1st.

One theme that came up throughout Friday and Saturday was food and health. It's encouraging to see more people connecting those dots. What we choose to eat shapes our bodies, our energy, and our long-term health. When people start asking deeper questions about their food - how it was grown, what went into it, how it affects their well-being - it signals a shift toward a more thoughtful food culture.

Interestingly, I had two separate conversations last week with women working in the health and nutrition field. Our discussions circled around something that seems to be a growing cultural challenge: how we think about food and everyday life.

Too often, food becomes an afterthought. We choose meals based on convenience rather than nourishment. We talk about macronutrients - protein, fats and carbs - but rarely think about the micronutrients, enzymes and living qualities in truly fresh food. For example, there is a difference between a protein shake and the protein in an egg. But many families simply lack the time to cook or confidence to prepare whole ingredients.

At a deeper level, there are cultural patterns at work. Processed foods have become normalized as “food.” Convenience frequently wins over nutrition. And perhaps most importantly, many people feel increasingly disconnected from how food is actually produced. That is why gatherings like the one at Töast matter. When farmers, chefs and eaters come together - even just for a meal - it helps rebuild that connection.

So here's a question worth reflecting on this week:

Which camp do you find yourself leaning toward?

Is food mostly something quick and convenient to get through the day or is it something you're intentionally exploring as a source of nourishment, connection and health?

No judgment - just an invitation to think a little more deeply about what's on the plate.

What Are People For? — A Conversation with Rod Spidahl

What is community actually for?

That’s the question behind this new two-part conversation with Rod Spidahl—a pastor, teacher, and longtime voice on faith, culture, and everyday life.

In Part 1, Rod helps us step back and rethink the foundations:
How language shapes culture, why individualism is quietly eroding community, and what it really means to live in interdependence with others.

In Part 2, the conversation turns practical:
Food, land, family life, and the everyday responsibilities that make a community real—not just something we talk about, but something we practice.

This isn’t just a conversation. It’s a framework for thinking about the kind of life—and community—we’re actually building.

If you’ve been following along with the Hub & Spoke vision, this will give deeper context to why it matters.

On The Plate: Our Pasture-Raised Eggs

When we spent the weekend at Töast, we brought our eggs with us.

It’s a simple product, but it carries a lot with it. How the hens are raised, what they’re eating, how fresh the eggs are when they reach the kitchen—it all shows up on the plate.

Watching chefs work with them—and hearing diners ask questions about where they came from—was a reminder that even the most everyday foods can reconnect people to something deeper.

Eggs are often seen as a staple, something quick and easy. But they’re also one of the clearest expressions of what good farming looks like.

If you’ve had our eggs recently, you’ve likely noticed the difference. And if not, this is a simple place to start.

Due to inclement weather, we were delayed in getting our beef to the butcher until this week. So there's still time, if there’s a specific cut you’re looking for, let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate! Beef will be ready in mid-April.
