are the heart behind Acres of Asher (formerly Acres of Eden), a regenerative farm nestled just outside Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Together with their daughters, Jayda and Willa, they’ve built a life rooted in purpose, resilience, and a deep respect for God’s creation.
In 2009, Joel took over the family farm from his father, Harland Haugen—a man whose legacy runs deep in the soil. Harland was born on the farm in 1929, served in the Korean War, and spent decades working for Otter Tail Power Company while farming in his spare time. Eventually, he retired to pursue farming full time, instilling in Joel a love for the land and a respect for hard work.
But Harland also shared stories how things used to be - before the times of synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, and how the community of farmers worked together on each other’s farms. That left a lasting impression on Joel. With encouragement from big sister Naomi, combined with Harland’s stories, and Joel and Christina’s vision for a healthier future, a bold transition was sparked: from conventional agriculture to regenerative, circular farming.
The shift wasn’t easy. Joel and Christina have faced countless challenges as they reimagined their practices—rethinking everything from soil health and infrastructure improvements to livestock care and dreaming about permaculture. Today, Acres of Asher is more than a farm; it’s a mission-driven enterprise dedicated to producing nutrient-rich food, without synthetic fertilizers, and a focus on community.
The farm motto, “Our Soil, Our Feed, Our Animals - Your Guaranteed Food Quality,” guides every decision. Through sustainable circular farming methods, they’ve created a system that nourishes both people and community. The love for the farm, the animals, and the way of life remains unchanged—but the methods have evolved and continue to evolve.
Acres of Asher exists to serve those seeking clean, healthy food and a better way forward. Joel, Christina, and their team continue to grow premium-quality products while cultivating a legacy of stewardship, innovation, and care.
