Planting Season, New Beginnings

Message from the Farm:

Demand better.

Not in an entitled, stomping-your-feet kind of way—but in the simple reality of supply and demand. Every dollar we spend on food communicates something. It tells farmers, stores, and food companies what we value and what we’re willing to support.

Many of you choose Acres of Asher eggs because they “taste better.” Or because “they’re soy-free.” Or because of the “deep yellow yolks”, the way the hens are cared for, or the desire “to avoid unnecessary chemicals.” Those choices matter.

But for many of us, food doesn’t (or didn’t!) become something we think deeply about until something starts to feel off—low energy, poor sleep, inflammation, chronic issues that seem to slowly creep in over time. What if those things aren’t random at all? What if they’re the accumulation of small choices made day after day?

In our conversation with Functional Nutritionist Katrina Mouser (below), we explored the connection between food, health, stress, farming, and the practical reality that what we eat affects how we live. It echoed many of the same themes we heard from Brent Martin of Legen Dairy Kefir and Cody Kurowski of Sower’s Harvest: food matters.

We’ve been sold convenience as the answer. Fast. Easy. Packaged. But convenience often comes with a hidden cost.

At Acres of Asher and throughout our growing network of farms, we believe change doesn’t have to be extreme. You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Real change happens one decision at a time: better eggs, better meat, better ingredients, growing 10% more of your own food (see the note from new Hub & Spoke Community partner The Wild Quiet Project below!), cooking one more meal at home this week.

Because what you eat matters. What your food eats matters. And ultimately, what you put into your body matters.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness. It’s about choosing today what will nourish you tomorrow.

So the question is simple: what are you demanding more of?

#DemandBetter

Start Small. Grow More.

Grow 10% is a seasonal project through The Wild Quiet Projectfocused on helping people grow a little more of their own food, use what they already have, and connect more locally — without the pressure of perfect gardens or full self-sufficiency.

The free May preview includes simple weekly emails with what to focus on right now, printable guides/checklists, and practical seasonal notes for our area. Beginning June 1, the full summer program will expand to include monthly printed field guides, casual meet-ups and seed swaps, and a private member group for sharing progress and ideas.

The full summer program is $45, with a discounted rate of $40 for Hub & Spoke Community members.

Grow 10% is designed as a simple entry point into stronger local food systems, shared resources, and community knowledge — something that naturally overlaps with the vision behind Acres of Asher and the Hub & Spoke Community.

A Conversation with Katrina Mouser — The Hidden Cost of Convenience

This month, we sat down with Katrina Mouser, Registered Dietitian and current master’s student in Functional Nutrition and Integrative Health—and owner of our partner farm Pure Joy Farms — to talk about food, health, gut health, stress, local farming, and why the quality of our food matters more than most people realize.

The conversation explores how modern convenience changed the way we think about food, the growing connection between nutrition and chronic health issues, and how small shifts in what we eat can have a lasting impact over time.

Katrina also shares practical ways families can begin making healthier food choices without falling into an all-or-nothing mindset.

This is one of those conversations that leaves you thinking differently about what’s on your plate.
